More information on possible costs for Natalya's workshops

More information from Barbara and a photos of some of Natalya's wonderful boots

I have given an indication of costs in the document (below) as per what I am paying in Newcastle. Until we know the travels costs, I am waiting on a response from Natalya as to when the university in Melbourne are looking to hold the workshops – we may be able to combine travel costs, I can only indicate in the region of $600 but that includes your shoe mold – which the cheapest I have found on the internet at around $60 USD plus postage. Costs will also be dependent on how many days the workshops are as it would be great to run more than one type.

Once I have initial interest we can work further of costings then. Creative Fibre have already completed a costing from their point of view but I think it may be a bit light as they have estimated $566 per participant.

I have had a good response from the Marlborough region so far which is great.

Expressions of interest in NATALYA BRASHOVETSKA workshop

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR MASTER CLASS WORKSHOPS WITH NATALYA BRASHOVETSKA - MAKING SHOES, BOOTS AND BAG - PROPOSED FOR 2018

Barbara King is wanting to organise workshops by Natalya in November 2018.  Barbara needs to gauge interest so please respond to her at and of the addresses below.  Natalya, who was born in the Ukraine, is doing three workshops in Australia later this year and travels around Germany, Paris, London etc teaching these classes.  The boots and shoes made in the workshops are just like any outdoor shoes or boots you would buy, solid soles with heels, heel boxes at the back, innersoles, tongues, laces etc. Have a look at her website.

It would be advantageous to possibly hold workshops in Christchurch, Marlborough and the North Island.  If anyone is interested in attending or arranging workshops in their areas, please contact me (Barbara).

At this point we are looking at October, November 2018 but Natalya has also been approached by a university in Melbourne and she will find out their preferred dates as we may be able to share travel costs.

Natalya Brashovetska- Proposal for Master Classes
Master Classes Options
1. "Boots and a bag" – 5 days. Please see below for more information.
2. "This boots are made for walking "- 3 days. During this lesson, students would only make boots without a bag. In order to assemble boots, felt must be dry.
3. “Shoes on a block". 2 days. This is an easier version of my master class. Felted shoes must be dry overnight to be assembled with other shoes accessories.
4. “ Shoes plus bag” . 3 days. During this lesson, students would make shoes and bag.

Master Class Description
First Option. Boots and a Bag – 5 days, 7-8 hours a day
This master class allows students to create two products in a short time, boots with laces and a matching hand bag.
A. Making Felted Boots
Students will learn:
1. how to take measurements and build the template;
2. how to use this pattern for the production of various models of boots in the future;
3. how to make boots with laces, which is a more complex model, and based on this knowledge, the students easy then can make other models of shoes. Explanations on this will be given during the class.
Natalya teaches not only how to create various models of felted boots based on one pattern, but she also teaches master skills of classic shoe maker adapted to felted boots, thus creating felted orthopaedic shoes. This involves creating felted shoes with a good level of foot support, having inner soles and stiff shoe back (heel box). This is a complex shoe making technique, but it is most solid way to make felted shoes, which have been tested by many of Natalya's clients during many years.

B. Making Felted Matching Bag
Students will also create a hand bag using Natalya's universal template.
This template allows to create 4 different bags. We will be creating one bag during the master class. However, students will receive instructions how to create another 3 versions of bag using the same original template.

Number of Students: 10- 12 due to a complexity of a master class. Natalya likes to work with her students on a basis one to one giving them lots of her attention, keeping a close eye on all processes involved due to a complexity of a shoemaking process.

EMAIL BARBARA FOR MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES ON EACH DAY AND THE LIST OF THINGS THAT ARE REQUIRED TO BRING. ALSO A CV FOR NATALYA
As an indication, I (Barbara) am going to a 3 day workshop for boots and a bag with Natalya in Newcastle in October this year and the cost for me is approx. $460 AUD for the workshop, and $135 AUD for the materials supplied by Natalya plus the cost of the wool. You get to keep your shoe mold and awl etc.

If we can arrange the workshops for next year it gives people an opportunity to put away $10 a week or so rather than paying out a large sum of money at once!

PLEASE CONTACT ME ON 021 2900 283 OR VIA EMAIL: arly@xtra.co.nz if you are interested in either attending a workshop or arranging for a workshop in your area and require further information. I have lots of photos from Natalya. Her Facebook page is GriNat and that is also her Etsy name should you wish to look at more of her work.
Thank you for your time.

Grand Fashion Parade 2017

Southern Felters members had garments accepted for the 2017 Creative Fibre Grand Fashion Parade with two members winning awards.

Victoria Haliday received the 'Designing for young contemporary fashion award' of $500 for Skirt Flirt.  This is hand-felted merino onto what was once a cotton piece from the early 1990s.  It has been up-cycled with some of the original features still evident.

Lynette Hartley was awarded the Bernina Fashion Award of a sewing machine valued at $1699 for the nest machine constructed garment.  The merino wool felted dress, hat and gloves is called Sea Urchin and has hand-made porcelain buttons.

Sea Urchin outfit included a felted jelly fish with an LED light that changed colour

Felting day this Saturday 6th May

It was a busy time leading up to the National Festival recently as Southern Felters were involved in organising both the Fashion Runway and the Fashion Exhibition. Thank you everyone for their help.  I for one, never want to see another naked mannequin again.  Two members of Southern Felters received awards in the fashion section and at least two in the general exhibition section (more to come on that once I get the photos sorted).

We have our feet nearly back on the ground and it is time to think about felting again.  It is happening this Saturday, usual time, usual place, so start preparing your next project.  Anna will be there this weekend with her rainbow of wools for sale.  We will also have catalogues from the Festival and a variety of magazines to peruse.

We have three exhibitions coming up in May, July and August so WE NEED YOUR FELT. More details later.
