Last Chance Early bird registration ENTRWINE

Come one, come all, register for ENTWINE National Festival (April 20-23rd) before 15th January for the earlybird registration. A wonderful programme has been planned for your fibery pleasure. Enrol for workshops & lectures, view the National Exhibition, Runway Show and Fashion Challenge. And don't forget the Marketplace for the best type of retail therapy. Catch up with old friends over your knitting and spinning, and make new friends too.

EDUCATION
Many of the workshops are already full. Be in quick for the last spaces in Margaret Stove's lace knitting, Marilyn Rea-Menzies' tapestry weaving, Lara Nettle's sock knitting, and Rene Corder Evans' felting. Have fun with needle-felting as Liza Adams shows you how to make Christmas decorations, knights and maidens, or a gorgeous jointed bear. Needle felting is an addictive craft you will be able to do with your family and friends. Experienced Harakeke weaver Anne Daniel will take you from a beginner's flax project to the more complex twined basket. Very appropriate for Entwine Festival! Super techy tutor Lara Nettle will help you to "Unravel Ravelry" and discover where the internet can lead you in your fibrecraft journey. If you have ever wanted to spin Art Yarns, Suzy Brown will show you how. Suzy's Fibre Preparation workshop is full, but there are still spaces for beginner and advanced Art Yarns, if you are quick. All of Beth Brown-Reinsel's workshops are full to the top (*newsflash: one space now in Latvian Wristers workshop!), but there is still time to enrol for her lecture on Traditional Knitting. She has come all the way from Vermont, USA to see us, so don't miss out on this opportunity.

EXHIBITION
Please support our National exhibition. We always have a good selection of top quality articles submitted. Now is the time to show the rest of the country what Canterbury can do. There are many awards too. They can be found in the latest CREATIVE FIBRE magazine.

Cottage and studo available for rent at Birdlings Flat

I have been contacted by the owner of a studio/workshop/cottage at Birdlings Flat.  Something to think about for a weekend retreat although I think the owner is looking for a longer term tenant.  Birdlings Flat is great.  Message below:

I own a fairly unique property in Birdlings Flat, Canterbury that has a small, 2 bedroom cottage on it and a large (60 m2) heated building that is divided into a workshop/studio and gallery/display area. It is approved by the council as appropriate for a home enterprise – that is the person who lives there can sell what they create. It is also in a prime location, being on the main road of the settlement where everyone passes when they visit the beach.

A couple of photos from our Felting day Dec 3rd 2016

Our last felting day of 2016
New people are welcome at our regular Saturday felting days at Halswell Hall.  No need to have done any felting before as we are happy to give guidance.  We have lots of fun.  Dates for next year's meetings out soon.

NEWS FROM TAFAN

Extracts from the Textile and Fibre Arts Network Newsletter 13, November 2016

I see TAFAN is organizing an exhibition at the Eastside Gallery again this year.  Their last exhibition was very successful and a good promotional opportunity for Southern Felters and our work.  They are encouraging submissions of "edgy experimental work" - no excuses for missing that - felters are good at edgy and experimental.

Craft de Clutter Sale
4 February, (Waitangi weekend), St Christopher’s Church hall, 244 Avonhead Rd, Avonhead. If you having a great cleanout, remember to donate any saleable items to the Network. Let the Network representative from your group know if you have stuff to donate and they can arrange collection in advance for sorting and pricing. We also seek volunteers for the Friday night setup 6-9pm, and to sell on Saturday- needed from 8.30 -1.00 pm.

“Textile and Fibre Arts Exhibition” “Look, touch, experience”
Advance notice. Eastside Gallery 31st July – 12th August 2017. We will be seeking your work to display in the Open category. Anything you are pleased with that has been made in the last two years and not exhibited elsewhere. Edgy experimental work most welcome, and yes with your permission, some works will be touchable. Textiles are so tactile and we all love to touch.

The challenge for 2017 will be ‘Transitions - from old to new’. This theme is in keeping with the philosophy of Eastside Gallery that has an annual recycling exhibition. So rescue that old jersey, blanket, table cloth, shirt, scraps, wool oddments, found items etc., and create something new and exciting. Any size, any shape, but if free standing must be able to stand unsupported.

Groups will be offered their own little space to exhibit their work. So far, Christchurch Needlework Guild and Southern Felters have expressed interest in this.

Demonstrators/Tutors sought to do demos and short 2 hour workshops. Week one. Demonstrations of skills and techniques of any of our arts and crafts. Think short demos, up to one hour, that can be repeated. Ideas so far are knitting socks on circular or four needles, felting, spinning silk, embroidery stitches, weaving demo, easy machine piecing etc. Half to one hour maximum. One for morning and one for afternoon. Week 2. Tutors sought for short classes of up to 2 hours. These will be advertised in 2017 as we didn’t get a very big response in 2015.

Photographs of your work are sought
Our Network brochure will be updated early next year and we want your photos to pretty it up. This can be any item of your work. - something you are really pleased with. It doesn’t have to be an award winner. If you are pleased with it we want to see it. Work in light and bright colours that photograph well is preferred. Send a full photo and close up if appropriate. Send as an attachment to Julie Devlin, devlin.family@xtra.co.nz
